Our research on the topic of science education in the rural areas of Bankura and Purulia district in West Bengal showed grim results.  In these areas not only presence of science education very sparse, but also it it spiraling towards complete absence.  Due to lack of knowledge of the value of science  education,  distance of educational institutions providing science education from home as well as just lack of availability of teachers with science based specialization are some of the key reasons of this decay.  Without the science education these societies not only are kept away from all the benefits of a possible science based degree, but more importantly they don't receive training in scientific thinking.  This lack of scientific thinking makes these societies vulnerable to easy exploitation, outlandish biases and beliefs.  These in turn keep these societies from reaching their full potential.  On the other hand we believe that if we equip the minds of future generations of these societies with systematic scientific training and knowledge we will not only enrich a large number of individuals but the society as a whole.

We understand that if we teach science just out of the text books following curriculum of the class, it will not work for the rural kids as this will make the subject of science too abstract to them.  These kids need to experience the results of human being's hundreds of years of focused scientific endeavor.  They need to experience with their own hands, eyes, brains and feelings that the world in which they move around is not made of magics, daemons and gods.  It is made of matter and energy.  Matter is made of energy, living beings are made of cells.  That every natural phenomena which sometime looks like magic is explainable through scientific methods.  That we need to see everything in nature and life through different perspectives, be curious, question things and don't settle until we have right explanation for them.  That is why we want to create something what we call Science Exploratorium.  Where these rural kids will be able to not only see scientific phenomena enacting in controlled environment but actually be able to actively participate in it. 

Sohojia is working with young kids who face different forms of unreasonable societal segregation, superstitions etc. in every step of their lives.  Consequently our mission is beyond making these kids pass academic exams on science.  Our goal is to train these young minds into thinking with facts and reason.  Questions blind believes and make decisions based on evidence and logic.
