25th December, 2023, Barshi, Bankura district, West Bengal, India
The event was hosted in the village of Barshi, Bankura. The sprawling old banyan tree beside the only village school building sheltered about 120+ kids, our volunteers, administrators and many guests for several hours. In front of that there was the makeshift stage decorated with paintings done by the Sohojia kids. This stage was used for all the performances and announcements.
The art exhibition was held on a rope. A very long rope where Sohojia kids hung 200+ of their own paintings surrounding the entire venue. Some of the remaining paintings were used to create the background of the stage. As we ran out of space for rest of the paintings, they were displayed on a table for interested guests to see.
Nearly every kid performed on the stage. Some did dancing, some singing, and some recited their favorite poems. All those kids were self trained on their performance. Their enthusiasm was inspiring. Because there were so many performances, the program went on for two hours or more. Most of the audience was sitting under the tree enjoying these kids giving their best.
Towards the end of the program Sokaler Pathshala kids under guidance of our Chapter Director Saikat performed Yoga. Not only they performed well, but before every pose they also explained the health benefits of each of the poses they performed. Audiences were captivated by this, but this was also educational for all.
We gave some gifts to each of our hard working volunteers. They were handed over by our program guest Shri Nikhil Mukherjee and Mrs. Namita Chatterjee.
Lunch was cooked in front of the school building by local cooks. Once the program was over hot rice, chicken curry and chatni was served to all kids, guests and volunteers.
Overall the program was very well received by our visiting guests. This was first such event organized by the Sohojia Foundation. Considering that, it was definitely a success. Guests praised the quality and creativity of the performances and arts done by the Sohojia kids. Kids also enjoyed the day with performance, play and food. Of course there is room for improvement, and next year we will come back with an even better event by and for the kids.
